Promise Me

...through eyes like fireflies...

Not that I didn't know if before, but music has woven itself so thoroughly and completely through my life that it's difficult to go even a day without some piece of music that fits an event or milestone.

When I woke up this morning, I had The Gun Club's "Promise Me" running through my head. Now Jeffrey Lee Pierce was an amazing writer and singer and it's a real shame that he died so young. His music (along with a handful of others) forms a large part of my waking day and some parts of my dreams. "Promise Me" is a very beautiful song filled with an insistent yearning and quiet despair - but not at all sad. You can read the entire set of lyrics in the extended entry but the lines that hit me right smack in the heart every time are:

"Promise me, someone who will promise me,
stand in the dark and fight like me."

Somehow standing in the dark these days is less daunting than before.

Promise me,
outside in the trees, they're waiting tonight
Promise me,
while the searching light moon has found me

you know it feels like the very last time again

Promise me,
someone who will promise me, stand in the dark and fight like me
through eyes like fireflies,

turn around and tell me, it'll be alright
is it alright?

Promise me,
don't cheat my soul when it returns to me
Promise me,
give me the vision I was born to see

you know it feels like years since they burned me away
you know it feels like years since they burned my heart away
you know it feels like years, feels like years
you know it feels like years since they took my eyes away
