Japanese email pain part II

arrrrghhhhh.....< smash! >

So...just after I wrote the last entry, I decided to write Soma-san that email that I had been telling him that I'd write. And do it in Japanese. Hmmmm. Sounds like a plan but I had not anticipated just how much it would cost...

I was zipping along and writing a fairly uncomplicated mail and doing pretty well. I had already been prepared for 90 minutes of work as I did last night. I came to a part where I needed to use my electronic dictionary (a Canon IDX-4500...R.I.P., read on...). I opened it and turned it on. The screen was pretty dim - to the point of not being able to read it. Ah ha! Batteries. A quick change and I've still got a dim screen. Hmmm...I touched the edges of the screen to see if there was anything obvious and noticed that if I pressed in one place, the screen got a little better. I finally got the screen back to readable shape and was able to do my lookups. Then, it happened...the screen went dim again. Pressing in that spot no longer helped.

Frustrated, I took it completely apart and the put it back together and it was exactly the same as before. Nothing was working, so I decided in one fit of genius that throwing it as hard as I could on the floor would fix it. Oh yeah, that worked really well...

20 minutes later, I was on the phone to a friend in Japan confessing my abuses and asking for a quick purchase of a new dictionary (a IDX-4600, this time). Fortunately, he took pity on me and did so. I sent him money to cover everything and now this email had just cost me over $200.

The email? Well, I finished it but thought long and hard about the pace I had set myself on...perhaps a bit of a break in studying so hard would be in order...
